When March finally rolls around on the calendar, the number of people who are ready to get out for a big party is gigantic! Even though there has not been as much snow as some years past, the leaves are getting ready to come back on the trees, and everyone around town knows that after a brief rainy season, spring is going to blossom in its fullest manner. Awesome food, Columbus Zoo animals, and an abundant amount of green are all on tap for the Blarney Bash this year, which is next Saturday the 18th in Dublin from noon until 11 P.M. All proceeds benefit the Dublin A.M. Rotary Charitable Foundation, and the fun that is just for kids takes place from noon until 5 P.M.
Celebrated in more countries than any other national festival, much of the gala takes place in memory of a 5th century Romano-British Christian missionary, and prominent bishop from Ireland. He became the nation’s most famous saint, and converted the pagans to Christianity. The color green that you will see being worn by many patrons during this festive event in Dublin has been associated with Ireland since the 1640’s, when the Irish Catholic Confederation donned the green harp flag. During 1903 was when St Patrick’s Day became an official public holiday in Ireland, and this celebration that takes place close to Columbus is a great way to experience the true “Shamrock Effect” that takes place right here in Ohio during this time of merriment.
Emcee of the special events this year is DJ Matty Sexton, who will no doubt have everyone in attendance excited to be here and revved up to party. The Richens/Timm Academy of Irish Dance will display their fine talents onstage around noon, and they have produced a long line of champions. 52 regional champions, 12 North American Champions, and 3 All-Ireland Champions with 2 runner-up finishes are just some of their prestige. The Rice Brothers take the stage immediately after: a fusion-folk band from Columbus, these two are prestigious State Award winners in music. Their obvious Celtic folk influence will stir the Irish roots in anyone, and have you twirling and dancing about to their warm sounds right away. The Ladies of Longford are celebrating 12 years of their unique breed of Celtic music, and their attention to tradition is awe-inspiring. Along with Irish music, they also perform country, classic rock, and Americana numbers.
There is nothing quite as refreshing as enjoying a pint of Guinness or whiskey shot of Jameson while reflecting on just how much the state of Ohio and out nation itself has changed since days of centuries old. Hearing the bagpipes resonate in the sometimes rainy landscape, having a few rounds with your close friends, and dancing the night away is going to be just what the doctor ordered, after perhaps feeling a bit cooped up all winter. The hot local number “Jacked Up” will be on site here performing their unique breed of country rock, with hard-hitting vocals and traces of mountain soul. As this action-packed night draws to a close, you can dance to the sounds of The Reaganomics, whose love for 1980’s rock will no doubt be infectious to you and your celebratory group. Tickets for this event are $10 at the gate, and youth 17 and under are free with Student ID before 4 PM.
